Real CNC simulation is pretty expensive stuff. Mostly intended for complex machines (5+ axis etc), for verification on expensive workpieces and setups.
Total simulation of the machine tool, cutting tool, workpiece, fixturing, etc. The goal is to eliminate collisions and to protect the workpiece from a bad toolpath (gouges etc)basic 3D graphic simulation of cutting is widely available in software like HSM/Fusion, Gibbs, etc. Gives you visual idea of what tools are going to do for material removal.
Can be useful for collision avoidance as well, especially with some 3D programming aids. This is the process I use most and it's very effective and not expensive.Backplotting in basic 2D verification of G-code is a popular feature of programs like Cimco Edit. Also very useful, if you like trace backplotting.
